Join me in supporting a petition to keep S.S. Keewatin in Port McNicoll.
In June 2012, the S.S. Keewatin, the last passenger steam vessel of its era that one can still view and tour, was returned to Port McNicoll thanks to the leadership of Eric Conroy and its owner, Skyline Investments. For the last eight years, hundreds of volunteers, the Friends of S.S. Keewatin, in Port McNicoll and Simcoe County have helped restore her interior and have attracted thousands of visitors to our region each season.
But, at the moment, the owner is looking toward removing the S.S. Keewatin from its home berth and donating it as a Canadian cultural property to a museum in Kingston, ON – something that requires the concurrence of the Minister of Heritage. The Friends and community supporters have a vision to keep her in Port McNicoll to ensure she can be visited by generations to come – to tell the epic story of steam passenger vessels on the Great Lakes.
