As many boaters on both the Trent Severn-Waterway and Georgian Bay know, the navigation channel from below the Port Severn Lock (Lock 45) leading South to the open waters of Georgian Bay, can be a hazard, especially to operators of larger vessels. It is narrow, shallow, turns sharply and is subject to strong currents existing the Port Severn dam and locks.  It becomes worse during low-water conditions, the prevailing conditions since 2000.

On April 7, 2014, MP Stanton introduced Motion 502 asking the Government to consider remedial measures to resolve this problem. The Motion reads,

“That, in the opinion of the House, the government considers the advisability of measures to deepen and straighten the vessel navigation channel which provides access between Georgian Bay and the westerly limit of the Trent-Severn Waterway, at Port Severn.”

MP Stanton commented on the success of the Motion, stating, “Local residents, boaters, marina operators, and shoreline business owners have raised this matter with me since 2006. The channel represents an impediment to access between the two waterways, and therefore limits the potential for economic benefits and the enjoyment our region as a destination for visitors, cottagers and residents alike. It needs to be deepened and widened. I am pleased that the motion has passed, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Government to ensure that remedial measures are taken to improve this channel. ”
