Meeting with Cardinal Charles Bo of Myanmar (Burma)
I was honoured to join His Eminence, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Myanmar, at Martyrs’ Shrine in Township of Tay yesterday. The Cardinal took time to visit the Shrine and sacred burial place of the Canadian Martyrs at Sainte Marie with Father Michael Knox.
We were joined by Members of the Board of Martyrs’ Shrine, Mayor Scott Warnock, and local artist Ingrid Brooks, who presented a painting of the national shrine to His Eminence.
The Cardinal spoke movingly of the situation in Myanmar (Burma); the need for continued support of displaced persons, and building a path to peace and reconciliation between military and ethnic groups. Myanmar is a multi-ethnic, multi-religion state in South-East Asia that only recently emerged from nearly six decades of civil war.
I am the current Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Burma. With me for this occasion was Friendsip Group member Jamie Schmale, M.P. for Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes—Brock.
