Canadian Government Launches Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund to Match Private Donations

We have all watched with profound disappointment and disbelief at the horror of the Myanmar military’s brutal routing of Rohingya residents in Northern Rakhine State, citing these atrocities were in response to attacks on its border stations last August.  This has led to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya residents fleeing for their lives, across the border into Bangladesh. The military’s actions have rightly been condemned by the United Nations and the international diplomatic community. The humanitarian need for the Rohingya refugees is urgent.

Today, the Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced the launch of the Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund to provide additional assistance to more than 900,000 Rohingya refugees and other persecuted minorities. The creation of this fund is in addition to the $25 million Canadian contribution in humanitarian aid and the appointment of the Honourable Bob Rae as a special envoy to Myanmar.

I am pleased that Canada is responding to this crisis in a concrete and passionate way.

For eligible donations made by Canadians between August 25 and November 28, 2017, to registered charities in Canada, the Canadian government will match this amount to support the humanitarian efforts of our trusted partners on the ground.
